Sounds so farfetched. Nintendo would be more likely to just hoard the IP than sell it. And if Platinum had the money to buy the rights from Nintendo, then they should have had the money to port the game without a kickstarter too. They'd first have to buy the rights before they can start a kickstarter and that comes with the risk that the kickstarter doesn't bring in enough money to finance the port(s), so the money spent on the rights would be wasted. But it's Kamiya's brainchild, so maybe the financial risk didn't matter too much.

I'm not sure Nintendo would have to sell the IP. Yu Suzuki licensed Shenmue 3 from SEGA, who still own the IP.

But the Kickstarter part sounds pretty questionable. Even more so now after Platinum secured the Tencent investment.

The investment is probably more for bigger, future projects, rather than for rereleasing previous games.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
