Yes, they do always insist on trying an "innovative" route, but I think this generation, they have delivered on a sandbox Mario, a Pokemon franchise on a docked console, and an Animal Crossing (that doesn't require amiibo and isn't a board game). To play devil's advocate, Nintendo skipped Metroid on N64, GBC, and Wii U... They've proven that they can fail the fans with that franchise (and others like F-Zero).
