Depends on what you're using the panels for. If it's a photovoltaic panel to generate electricity, then yes, the returns are fairly low. But if it's a solar thermal collector to heat your water, then it's a much larger saving AND you get the bonus of having hot water if the power ever goes out. 

Frankly, I think it should be mandatory for all car washes to use solar water heaters. Those that do instal them cut their natural gas consumption down by leaps and bounds and pay the installation off in 2 to 3 years.
