The trailer was a reference to a part of Three Houses.  If you played it you'd probably have liked it more... and if you hadn't played it, you probably weren't going to get too excited about Byleth either way.

I figured it was a reference to something similar that happens in the game. Especially with the old man's comment. But I tried to imagine if I'd find the Smash invitation a clever solution to the problem, or if it would make sense. And that is hard to imagine. But maybe it was.

I can get excited about guest character trailers from games I haven't played. But it can certainly help if I have.
I thought the way they introduced Banjo was great for example.

Joining Smash was about as good of a solution to the problem as it was for Corrin in his/her trailer.  That's kind of the joke.  Especially this time around, a lot of the trailers have had in- jokes.   K-Rool's made little sense if you didn't know about his vocal supporters, Banjo's didn't make sense unless you'd seen K-Rool's, and Terry's didn't make much sense if you hadn't played Fatal Fury or KOF.

Byleth isn't a character that is especially visually interesting character, and isn't really a character like Terry or Banjo where there reputations precede them even if you hadn't played their games.  The trailer was really only going to appeal to Three Houses players, and that's fine.  Joker's trailer did nothing for me, but not everything has to be for everyone.
