In my opinion Sony is just hoping they can use 3rd party games to prop up Playstation in Japan. If that won't work, then they will give up. I feel that's hoping for the best versus taking an initiative. But we have differing perspectives.

I hear you, the console market is revived solely because Playstation 4 is a thing. Not because of 3rd party developers.

Persona 5 did fine in the west for that style of game.

I was suggesting they may have to moneyhat games to combat Switch in Japan eventually, you're conflating different discussions. Nintendo will definitely make them and maybe moneyhat too. Sony has little interest in making games for Japan, but I can seem them moneyhatting though.

The games that Sony has funded has primarily been action titles with a western appeal. Hence, Sony is popular in the west and they fund games for that market. Sony is popular in Japan but they don't really fund games for them. The reasons are fairly obvious. The west matters more and that's is what Sony is focused on.

@bold: That opinion is based on what exactly? What do you mean by give up? Playstation is a global brand at this point, with strong support in every single region generation after generation, which is something the other competitors can't really claim.

About the funding of games in the "west" vs Japan, I mean, we do have examples like Bloodborne and Demon's Souls right? Not sure I would classify them as "action titles". I have no data to show they are investing more money in 3rd party deals in one area vs the other. One thing should be noted though, there is no competition from Microsoft in that market, which means every big budget game gets made for the PS4, with less than a 50% (guessing) chance of it ever coming to Xbox.

The games you mention have significant appeal in the west. Demon's Souls was relatively new idea at the time, Bloodborne was essentially more of that. I would classify them as action games.

Anyway, this is a wait and see thing. Their significance in Japan has decreased with their exit in the mobile market. They've virtually given up Japan centric games.

I dont really even care, I just have some thoughts. I dont feel we really need to explore this any further.
