“We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year,” a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz."

So rumor has it Sony and ESA are not getting along. Whatever Sony wanted to do was not in line with what the ESA wanted.

Iirc there were E3 2020 leaks that the ESA is planning to turn E3 to more of a fan event like Gamescom. Sony might have disagreed with that.

From what I have read, it's the exact opposite.  It seems like there is a battle behind the scenes as to what E3 should become, or what it should remain.  Sony wanted it to become more of a fan celebration, similar to Comic-Con/Gamescon, where you would have 100K-200K+ attending.  Others wish for it to remain like it is now, mostly gaming press and insiders, where you have maybe 60K-70K attendees.  The ~15K tickets they started giving out to the public in 2017 was probably a compromise.  I guess it was too little too late.

It's funny to see people who talk about streaming using the internet as a big part of the future, yet when it comes to E3, act like we are still living in the 90s.  This is the internet age.  It doesn't matter where Sony drops the info and when, PS5 info will spread like wildfire through the internet.  Just look at the Wired articles and the 5.2M likes on Instagram in just two days, just for a stinking logo, as proof.  People are ready for the PS5.
