This is a way worse butcher job. Godzilla is the kind of stuff you can just reboot and pretend the bad stuff never happened, Star Wars can't really do that.

Agreed. Also, it's not like they released a promising, but flawed, film first, to then release a film that ruined the lore and the characters. It would be like releasing Godzilla '14 first, people thinking it was ok to good, not great, but excited to see the sequel. Then, they release '98. "Bet you didn't expect Godzilla to look like this, huh? Expectations subverted!"
