One thing that the impeachment could end up doing is that Trump could simply end up saying "Screw this, I'm out of here" and resign, especially if what comes to light during his trial exposes him or his family to serious legal jeopardy. That's really the only way the impeachment has even a snowball's chance in hell of getting him out of office, since the Senate will acquit him. Then Pence can pardon everybody involved.
