I've been using VR since Rift dev kit 2. Astrobot is the best VR game I've played. PSVR does a great job with it. PSVR does not do a good job in theatre mode. The screen door effect ruins the experience. I've never watched a movie in the higher-end units. But, I'm skeptical that even those are good enough for movies right now. But, I agree that this is theoretically a good use of VR. The tech just isn't there yet. As I've mentioned other times on VGC, the coolest experience I've had in VR was watching a live boxing match on my Samsung Gear VR. I felt like I was sitting in the front row. That experience convinced me that VR will be a great way to experience sporting events. However, due to resolution and screen door effect limitations, even high end VR only works for things that take place in a very small area right now. Basketball will be good soon, I think. But, we're a good ways from being able to follow a baseball game or golf in VR. Those sports currently look terrible. The time will come though that we'll all be sitting behind home plate, courtside, and on the 50 yard line. |
VR definitely shows just how much further we have to go in resolution. For everyone saying they can't see the diference between 720p/1080p/4K, try viewing them at 300" or more.
You are right on though. Once we reach the point were we can start filming and viewing live sports in somthing like 16K VR, it will completely change the way people watch sports at home. WWE is my favorite live event platform, and they do their major shows in 180deg 3D. Like you said, it is like you are actually there in the ring, or front row at the event. You feel all the energy of the crowd, and from the ring post cam it feels like you are standing on the aporn right next to the wrestlers.

Unfortunately, I don't play in VR much due to the small added hassle of cleaning and wearing the headset, plus I have a gen 1 PSVR so it needs unplugging if I want to play an HDR game, so that adds a little extra complication. I still think that VR will improve to the point where the extra hassle of wearing a headset is more than made up for by the awesome experience of VR. I'll probably be day 1 with PSVR2 if that ever happens. |
Your going to have a huge quality of life improvement when you upgrade. I ended up giving my PSVR Rev 1 to my brother, and getting the PSVR Rev 2 for myself due to the whole lack of HDR pass through issue. That was a major oversight by Sony, as I imagine that most people that would have bought into VR day one, would also be tech enthusiasts that would be grabbing 4K HDR TV and PS4 Pro.

I bought the psvr when Skyrim vr came out, I thought that would be an incredible experience. I was blown away for like 5 minutes and then I got frustrated by all the downgrades that had to be made to do vr. It’s kind of my experience with all vr games, first 5 minutes are cool and then you start thinking about how much more fun and enjoyable everything would be if I could just look at one fixed point, like my tv. Psvr is just a paperweight. It is still hooked up to my PlayStation, but I don’t think I have used it at all the last year and a half or so... |
If you havn't played Beat Saber and Astro Bot, then I would highly suggest giving them a try. Look for them on sale if you must, but they are both worth it if you already have a PSVR. Beat Saber is my family game of the genration. I have every platform, so there is no lack of party games to choose from when everyone gets together, and a year later, it is still the go to party game.

It is still a hassle though (PSVR) needing the right light conditions, space, camera setup, mind the cables, more controllers to charge, dealing with annoying comfort options or limited movement options. It's worth putting up with all that for what you can get already. Currently I'm playing Borderlands 2 VR with the aim controller and Beat Saber and Blood and Truth with the move controllers. I played NMS with the DS4 which still works better for movement, Next gen needs analog sticks on the motion controllers. |
Comfort options drive me insane. Basically, how to make a VR game feel like crap 101. Even worse is when they are not an option. Nothing worse than being forced in to tunnel vision and snap turning. I feel so bad for people that get a VR unit and buy a game that forces these terrible comfort practices on them, and they get turned off from VR. I can totally understand how someone would not get the excitment around VR if they ended up playing one of those expereinces.
As far as hardware and PSVR goes, new controllers are the biggest thing I am looking forward to. The PSVR Headset itself will look great on PS5 with higher quality visuals and higher resolution source material, but as long as we are limited by the Move controllers, PSVR will always be a compromised experience. Bring on PlayStation Move 2 with anologue sticks and finger tracking, and let devs start building some AAA level games for VR on PlayStation!
