It has a beastly 145SpAtk. Its literally the strongest non-legendary offensive mon of its gen.
Blastoise is alright I guess.

It also has remarkably good Defense and Special Defense on top of that, with shoddy attack (which it never uses anyway) and decent Speed/HP. It's basically a perfect balance, all on top of an outstandingly exceptional Special Attack. Get a modest one (SP attack up, attack down), and it gains even more. My Chandelure beasts just about everything it comes into contact with. It's hard as hell to get to its final form with its late evolution and dusk stone requirement (and it doesn't learn any moves in its third evolution), but man it's my perfect pokemon. Fighting, Psychic, Ghost, and Dragon are all must-haves. Fairy, Steel, and Bug are also essential in many ways. Base elements like electric, Water, Grass, Ground, Rock are nice but mediocre in some ways.

On top of that it has a very good attack movepool. Not a great supporting one, but with its SpAttack you'll want it on offense. I dont get how people think it has a bad design when way back to gen1 we had designs like Jynx, Voltorb and Mr Mime.

For me Psychics, Dragons and Steel are a must-have for convenience. I dont really think any specific type is mediocre per-se, but some type combinations can be a problem. Specially electric trypes, I hardly ever use them. In the multiplayer metagame they are almost worthless cause of how popular certain moves are that keep them in check.
