This is where I insert a long comically exaggerated sigh, because this thread and other threads like it are why I chose to stop regularly participating in discussions on this site. There's a real opportunity here to discuss the merits of videogames as art, to examine what makes us feel different ways and how that affects game development...but everyone's just spewing ignorant nonsense about bias in games media and how this is only getting good reviews because it's Kojima and a dozen other poorly thought out, poorly explained, intellectually bankrupt opinions masquerading as fact.

Even when someone like Torillian comes in here with something poignant to say, half of you just jump on him, twisting his words and putting meaning into what he writes that just isn't there in order to justify your shitty beliefs about what is and isn't good game design.

The fact that people are bitching about how 'this game gets called boring for stretches but gets good reviews because Kojima' shows that not only do a large majority of you not understand the underlying tenents of artistic expression as a whole, but you don't even understand the value of art in the medium you're acting protective over!

So I'll spell it out for you: A game can be 'boring' for long stretches and otherwise have lacklustre elements and still be good. A game can falter in certain areas and still get good reviews. How? Sometimes the bad parts of a game are good enough to nullify the parts that don't stack up. Sometimes a game isn't about steady action, but the 'boring' bits are there for tension building, atmosphere, and story elements. I can't believe this has to be explained, and I feel like such an arrogant ass speaking like this but it's baffling how so many of you can be so uncultured that you think that bombastic 'fun' is the only thing you should get out of a videogame. It's threads like this and responses like that which make me feel like resorting to the 'go play COD' dismissal, no matter how terrible that is. I just don't know how to explain to people that there's more to the medium than explosions and action. I don't know how to explain to you that art can move you without necessarily being 'fun'. I don't know if I'm qualified to teach you the basics of artistic expression and the value of variety in any media.

If you don't understand those fundamentals, then I don't want to have a discussion with you. And that's why I don't bother coming around here very often. So few of you have even the slightest desire to widen your horizons or even accept that the world exists beyond the narrow scope from which you view it. I also know that me saying things like this is just going to make me look like a snooty, arrogant SJW virtue signalling posh cunt or something, but I don't even care. Get some culture and grow up for fuck's sake. Not all of you, but more than half of you. No wonder this place is dead. All the good posters regularly leave.
