I'd say that's because of an external factor that Sony didn't see coming, because a reduction of 2.5m units through two quarters this late in the lifecycle is unlikely due to things that are under Sony's control. What happened is that Nintendo didn't cut the price of Switch, and Sony likely wants to be perceived as the premium brand in console gaming, so they can't cut the PS4's price with that long term goal in mind, neither of the base model nor the Pro SKU. So Sony takes a hit in unit sales for the sake of that image, because said image is deemed more valuable in the long term than the unit sales in the short term. |
This is a good point. PS4 is technically last gen, but they don't want people to see it as last gen.

Until theres something better on the market in terms of hardware.... its current gen.
Switch is older tech & weaker than the PS4.
So until PS5 or XB2, its current gen.
