It's supposed to show the transition from a clean beautiful era under the Republic to a gritty dirty era under the Empire. Maybe they failed but that was the point.

The strange thing I see between original movies and the prequel is how the technology devolved a lot if you follow chronology of the movie, we know that it was just because better stuff were available for the prequels. But we can pretend it is a semi-apocalyptic time in the original trilogy even more for the rebels that had to scrape by to get stuff.

What doesn't make sense yet for the new trilogy is how after peace was made again, how they lost control of everything so fast (and they will probably make another trilogy to tell how they gone from 6 to 7).

The funny thing is this is actually a trope of High Fantasy. Usually in high fantasy, civilizations, technologies, weapons and anything else from some ancient era are vastly superior to that found in the current age. It's interesting that you could actually, since Star Wars also deals with 'magic' and a clear black/white view of 'good' versus 'evil', classify Star Wars as a fantasy film, that just happens to take place in space.
