Pokemon Sword/Shield could end up becoming the best-selling game of the year during its first weekend alone. Regardless, this will be the 11th year where Pokemon has the best-selling game of the year.

1996: Pokemon Red/Green - 1,663,861
1997: Pokemon Red/Green - 3,995,992
1999: Pokemon Gold/Silver - 3,628,627

2016: Pokemon Sun/Moon - 3,246,222
2017: Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon - 2,003,607
2019: Pokemon Sword/Shield - ???

In 2017, the best selling game of year was Dragon Quest XI with around 3 million copies between the PS4 and 3DS versions.

Maybe this is a best-selling Nintendo chart. Or best-selling game on a single console. But I agree; if you can't count PS4 + 3DS, then it's also not fair to count both Utra Sun & Ultra Moon together. Worth pointing out that the "Ultra" games were pretty much re-releases of the games from the year before.

Pretty amazing that Red/Green managed to win two years in a row, though.
