I dont think it's correct to call it that they dont compete against each other, because clearly they do in some fashion and there's no way around it. Parents buying systems for their kids still have to pick, many adults can only afford one and so on.. with that said there are some differences.
I kind of look at it this way
If PS/Xbox is a car then Switch is a motorcycle - they compete for the same space, they offer similar but still different experiences, but you can own both or just the one based on different variables :>
