The holy trinity of Unreal - Half-Life - Thief alone would make 1998 a strong contender even if nothing else had been released that year, but it had a bunch of other timeless classics both on PC and consoles. Interesting that only Half-Life made it to the consoles. I'm currently playing it on PCSX2, at first I was sceptical, it has a slow start, and I don't mean only the intro, but it gets a lot more fun after the first few levels.
Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.
