The meaning is in everything he learned all throughout his adventures. The friends he made and the relationships he built across the world. Victory brought him nothing it was everything leading up to the victory that he can claim as his reward. He lost and gained friends a long the way. He didn't lose contact with his family they are still waiting for him. This is his time doing something he loves for himself. I'm sure his family is proud they were able to raise such a responsible and independent son.
They might forget him soon but his memories of the adventure will last a lift time and his friends will remember him for just as long.
