It sounds like Games Pass is taking precedence over the next generation Xbox. Which likely means MS Studios are going to develop and optimize for both the XOne/Scarlett. MS Studios won't be able to push the Scarlett if they're held back by the XOne. But I guess some of you are okay with that. 

This makes Scarlett sound like an after thought coming into the next generation. The worry is signified through the transition of Xbox as a console, to Xbox as a subscription service, as these statements from Phil make it sound like. Yes, MS is adamant about local hardware being key, but this could mean Project Scarlett, or the entire Xbox ecosystem, as ambiguous as MS made it sound.

But isn’t supporting your old console a good thing when Sony does it? How many times on this forum have we heard about Sony’s “ten year plan” that they started, even though Nintendo did it first? So now it’s a bad thing that Xbone owners might not have a reason to need to upgrade right away to Scarlett? 

Modern game design works exactly like you’re describing with developers designing for a wide range of hardware capabilities. You’re acting as if MS is going to radically change how game design or console generations work. There will be cross gen support for awhile, just like with every console, but eventually games will only be on Scarlett. MS doesn’t care if you upgrade, because if not, you can keep using GamePass and keep getting great games, or you can even use xCloud to stream those Scarlett games with your old Xbone. Sounds like a good deal for consumers?

But as they’ve been adamant about, streaming isn’t for everyone. So they’ll have powerful hardware there for anyone wanting to stay traditional. All their games work no matter how you’re going to consume them, so there’s no need to make up fake concern about how they’ll treat Scarlett.

It sounds more than just supporting an old console. MS downplayed the need to buy the Scarlett. No where in that interview did Phil say current XOne owners didn't have to upgrade right away. Sony would never state they don't want current PS4 owners to upgrade to PS5. If they did, Nintendo and Xbox fans would be having a field day. Just look at how Sony have handled "ten year plans" in conjunction with a new console launch in terms of PR. If MS is implying a "ten year plan," they could have phrased it a lot better. 

Yes, cross generation games are a thing, but there aren't many of them past the first year. How many XBO/PS4 exclusives happened to be cross developed with the PS360 in mind? Titanfall and LBP3 are the only two that come to mind. Streaming Scarlett games on the XBO just devalues owning a Scarlett. Good for the consumer, sure, but many more also want a true next generation experience. I wouldn't want PS4 holding back games development for the PS5.
