Oh, Awakening definitely caused a shift in direction for the series, that much is clear - look at Shikamaru's post for example. That is a criticism Fire Emblem fans do have, but they don't blame Awakening directly for it as that shift in direction only fully materialized in Fates.

I think its more that they blame Awakening for what was eventually to come. After all, it became the best-selling game in the franchise, until Fates. Granted, I have not played Fates and even the things I heard about it don't sound that bad to me, or at least make me feel that the game sounds bad.
