I actually think it makes great sense.
Hardcore fans always buy the consoles early on, and usually demand alone from the hardcore, is enough to have things sold out or near it.
While the holidays is the time where more "normal" consumers, also get a console. However if their sold out at that time? its just missed sales.
Launching early, giveing the hardcore their console, and stockpileing backup for the holidays, means you dont run into supply issues, and miss out on maximising the effects of the holidays.

That gap is probably gone in this year.... at this point, Im expecting the Switch to overtake the Xbox One, before the Xbox Two even launches.
