If the Switch's successor launches prior to July 2024 then the Switch will have spent the majority of it's life on the market with the PS4/XBO not the PS5/Scarlett. It will be remembered primarily as a contemporary of the ps4 and xbox one.

Personally I expect the Switch successor to launch March 2023, which would put it at 44 months alongside ps4/xbo and 28 months alongside PS5/Scarlett.

Have you convinced anyone yet that the Dreamcast is in the same generation as the Saturn? Or rather, do you believe that yourself at all?

Dreamcast was discontinued so the lifespan definition doesn't exactly work. There is no set definition for what a generation is that works in all circumstances. What we do know though:

Switch will spend most of it's life alongside the PS4/XBO not the PS5/Scarlett.
Switch released closer to PS4/XBO than PS5/Scarlett.
Switch will share more of it's library with PS4/XBO than PS5/Scarlett.

So why would you choose to group it with the PS5/Scarlett over the PS4/XBO? Because you think the generation it's put in is a statement on it's relevance or quality?

At the end of the day with no proper definition common consensus is all that matters, and the Switch will be labelled as an eighth generation console, just as it is on wikipedia already.
