Just on hype, Square would win that E3. I do believe that FFVII was actually shown by Sony, since they were going to publish and market it in the US. But that was the killer app for the PS1 that boosted it past Sega and Nintendo. After that, the games, and sales of the PS1 itself, just kept going and going. That game was so big even the mainstream press was talking about it.
