As a hardcore GameCube fan back in the day, I can tell you the late N64 days and most of the Cube days were pretty rough too. Lots of weird, niche stuff, and just felt like Nintendo was still locked in this pointless arms race rather than just making appealing game, though I still liked a lot of the N64/Cube stuff, it was more 2nd and 3rd party titles.
