The difference is that they started cramming too much in too little time way before they ran out of source material.
Book 1, 694 pages=season 1
Book 2, 761 pages=season 2
Book 3, 973 pages=season 3+4
Book 4+5, 1769 pages=season 5
Every plotline from books 4 & 5 were either cut, condensed or combined so what he said is correct, it wasnt a lack of source material but trying to fit too much in too short of time that caused the drop in quality.
