They could easily make a calibration for all games with IR pointing (some do), but I think they wanted to allow you to change the distance from the screen as much as you want (i.e. move from the couch to a chair). I never had any problems with it, for me the crosshair appears fairly accurate vs where I'm pointing to.
To me, it doesn't matter anyway as long as it's not off by a big distance, since I don't look at the controller while playing.
