I still hate this

I'm with you. If this isn't coupled with at least a P5 port (we'll know by the 25th if it does), it'll really rub me the wrong way, just like Snake's inclusion does.

I'm going to be super disappointed if the rest of the DLC characters are just random choices from other systems that don't have any roots in Nintendo history. Steve and Master Chief are my nightmare.

But Minecraft was on Wii U, 3DS, and Switch? Pacman doesn't have roots in Nintendo history, but he deserves to be in because he's super iconic. Steve is also super iconic. He's the Mario of Gen Z, like it or not, and the most iconic indie game character. It's better than a Fortnite character. Minecraft has proven staying power in video game culture, whereas Fortnite is already fading. Not saying Steve is my first choice, but he makes sense as an inclusion in Smash when he's easily the most iconic video game character to grace a Nintendo system that isn't in Smash yet. Also, that one guy that predicted Daisy, Ridley, Isabelle, Simon, and Incineroar also said that a Minecraft stage would be in as DLC, so that probably means Steve will too. Get used to the idea now. Nintendo is trying to expand their audience with these picks. That's why they're 3rd party characters, because there's just so many 3rd party characters that are more iconic than anything Nintendo has left at the bottom of their IP barrel. I want the Genos and Isaacs of Nintendo's history too, but it's just not happening.

As for Master Chief, I could see it, but only if the partnership between Nintendo and Microsoft takes off as much as the wildest rumors are suggesting. I'm talking the rumors that we aren't just getting Xbox Live and Gamepass on Switch, but that we're getting Master Chief collection and Halo 5 on Switch's version of Gamepass. An announcement like that at E3 I could totally see, with maybe even multiple Microsoft characters announced, with Banjo joining Steve and Master Chief. Banjo is really the only one of those I actively want, but you have to admit that kind of partnership would be exciting, and if we got that kind of partnership as the rumors are suggesting, getting Microsoft Smash characters isn't the least bit farfetched.
