I think the reason why he wanted to spend so much time with children is probably because he lost his own childhood from the immense super stardom he experienced at an early age. He perhaps felt that he missed out on something that almost everyone has?
Regardless, the man is dead and isn't here to defend himself, so it seems a bit wrong for people to come out of the woodwork and begin attacking him.
