DS: 2005. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, WarioWare, etc. This is the year where the idea of the DS being a "third pillar" died.
3DS: 2013; If we are talking about the West that is. Awakening and New Leaf were 2012 releases in Japan. They were the strongest 2013 releases in the West for the 3DS.

It would be interesting to see a similar thread about the Wii and Wii U peak years, and maybe the NES/SNES, and GB/GBC/GBA.

Wii is either 2007 or 2010.  Both had a Metroid and a Mario Galaxy.  I'd give it to 2010 with Donkey Kong Country Returns, Red Steel 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Kirby's Epic Yarn, No More Heroes 2, Goldeneye, Epic Mickey, and Sonic Colors.

Wii U would probably be 2014 .  Mario Kart 8, Smash, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Shovel Knight, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, Child of Light.  But 2015 is also pretty close, with Mario Maker, Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and Pokken.

2015: And that is considering the Switch (NX at the time) was announced, Nintendo going mobile was announced, Nintendo's E3 being maligned at the time, Iwata passing away (God rest his wonderful soul), and Nintendo slowly steering away from the Wii U. What an interesting year that was...
