But putting it in a direct, would have sullied a direct. Best to have the bad news be on its own and not take away from somethign else

I was thinking announce the delay Thursday morning, and then later in the day announce a Direct for Friday

I guess the issue is Nintendo, from my recollection, never released a direct on a Friday before. Also, apparently, in a business sense, it made sense to post the news on a Friday due to how the business cycle works. Once the weekend is over, it becomes old news instead of being dwelled at for the whole week.
