If we can have $50,000 Bravia's, and $1,000 Xperia's, and $3,200 Walkman's from divsions loosing money and selling less than 10 Million units a year, then a $1,500 enthusiast PlayStation from Sony's most profitable and highest selling hardware division should be a very easy call to make.

I think a PS5 that is built for the core gamer and game streamer would be an awesome option. Doubling the CPU, GPU, and RAM like you suggest, would be great for both communities within the PS ecosystem. Going from 8C/16T to 16/32 would be great for background task, and video editing. Double GPU's would allow for some amazing things in the VR space, along with higher resolutions, and improved frame rates. Double RAM would be great for higher res assets, background tasks, and especially video editing.

I'm all in for Sony offering more from PlayStation. They have 90 Million people with different tastes, desires, and talents. They could better serve their current customers with more varity in Hardware and Software, and open up the doors to even more consumers in the process.

As we move forward, Sony will be facing competitors that are not going to limit their users. If Sony wants to keep their PlayStation userbase, they are going to need to remain competitive across a range of devices. They are not going to be the only game in town with 3rd party AAA titles and a great AAA 1st party line up next gen. Between Microsoft offering their games on PC, and Google, EA, and Ubisoft planning to offer cloud gaming everywhere, Sony is going to have to give people really good reason to stick with their Hardware, Software, and Servcies.

I know that an extreme box like you are discribing would only reach a very small audience. There might be 1 - 5 million people in the world willing to pay $1,000+ for a PlayStation. The ones that do though, are the ones that also buy every game. They are the most profitable users in Sony's ecosystem. It would benifit Sony to give these people every reason to continue buying their Hardware, and Playing 3rd party titles in their ecosystem.

The rumors of Microsoft's next gen plans look the best IMO. A $99.99 streamer, a $299.99 XB4, a $499.99 XB4 X, and anything from a $299.99 Laptop to a $20,000 Windows Gaming Machine. A range of devices for every consumer. That is what Sony is facing. I just don't see (1) $399.99 PS5 leading the market, against a much more open ecosystem, that lets you play your games anywhere, and at any resolution/framerate you are willing to pay for.
