That is the point. There isn't any real objective way to determine which was better.

If sales define it, then you have the Fifas, CoDs, etc that would be better than much of other games.

Metacritic is flawed beyond imagination and even if it wasn't reviewers are still opinion they don't evaluate technically.

There isn't much real difference between personal (or collective) taste versus reviewer taste.

So when someone puts that with only BotW and Oddissey no other console ever had a better year then it is beyond hyperbolic, even more when trying to dismiss Detroit because metacritic got it under 80.

You can make a bridge to any other entertainment. The musics that sell the most would hardly qualify as the better ones, neither the ones that win grammies. As those won't be better in technical analysis than classic music ("as a genre").

So obviously it will always end up inside the taste. And as much as you want to say only a Sony fanboy would think 2018 games on PS4 were better than BotW and Odissey, only a Nintendo fan would make a claim that these two games trump any other gaming year in history.

I will tell you that no 2 games would fill my full year of gaming. Not even Gran Turismo which I love dearly and played over 650h on GT5 and on average more than 300h each would fill more than 3 months of my time on 2 games alone.

If I would say, during a normal year I probably finish about 20-30 games.

So if you want to say Switch got a phenomenal launch window, or even that it had the best ever launch lineup ( I would have to research further to see if I would put any above it, but I don't think I would) I would easily agree. But these 2 games better than any year in gaming on 40 years of history isn't something I would agree, even though I play Mario for a long time (with NSMB the only game I 100% on DS) and can recognize Odissey and BotW as fantastic games even if I don't really want to play they and think HZD better than BotW.

If you ask me, Phantasy Star II and IV are the best RPGs to me, league ahead any RPG i have played so far including Xeno games and Fire Emblem series. Sure, i'm a Nintendo fan, but depends on what kind of game, i can agree or not, and definitely not some cinematic with QTEs games. "these 2 games better than any year in gaming on 40 years of history isn't something I would agree", of course they aren't, but if we compare them to GOW, Spider Man and Detroit, a lot people think they are better outside Sony fans and graphic fans

I have no problem with either you not liking GoW (Which won GOTY), SM and Detroit or thinking they aren't better than Odissey and BotW, but those were just 3 of the games on 2018. GoW even if fantastic and having a lot of gameplay and story besides graphics, SM being pretty fun and gameplay heavy, Detroit with a deep story are more than just graphics (although those are the most impressive features on then) are certainly not for everyone and surely sold less than Odissey and BotW plus review score is lower but neither are definite measures of what is better.

He didn't said that no publisher made 2 games on the same year better than Odissey and BotW nor something of the like. He put all games launched in the year on another platform.

If I asked you if you would ask you (as usually people like to go to these extremes), would you rather play these 2 games for the rest of your life or chose all the games on a console launched in any specific year of your choosing. Which year and platform would you chose?
