Wasn't it widely predicted that Sony stuffed the channels big time in 2017 to hit the 20m goal. So for all we know they could be up in 2018 in terms of actual sales.

Not quite.

  1. sony actually shipped fewer units in 2017 compared to 2016 because they had an excess of units from 2016.
  2. stuffing channels doesnt mean anything with regards to selling 20M units in one year. If the demand for your product isn't there it wont sell anyways and you end up with a supply excess.
  3. Unless you are literally doing firesales (looking at you XB1) and main all manner of deals and promotions all year round to ensure you sell all those units which sony didnt do.
  4. What really happened is that sony shipped alot out in 2016 but quickly realized that they had reached the limit of how many consoles they could sell effectively at $399. Hence why the price was dropped in 2016 to spur sales. Where it has remained since probably because they are ok selling at their current pace. Cause we all know permanently dropping t $199 could at least make the baseline go up...... though at this point maybe it will only keep it flat YOY.

So what did sony ship in 2016 and 2017?
