Well Crash come after Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing.

It took the best elements of both at the time and combined them.

Yep.

It's a copy but it's a damn good copy. So many others tried to rip off Mario Kart but came up short on one way or another. CTR took it to another level.

I may just fire up my Vita today and take it for a spin.

Yep they sure did.

The other thing people forget about the two is that Nintendo aim Mario Kart at a wider audience, that is why you will get the core gamer  who swear black and blue that Diddy Kong is better than Mario Kart.

On a personal level by myself I do prefer the harder challenge and being rewarded for being better.

However with Mario Kart, I can play it with anyone. I think Mario Kart 8 has come a long way and is probably balanced enough as half the time I need to slowdown to let someone I know (like my wife or friend) win lol.

I know people hate the blue shell, but tbh playing with casuals even if hit they never even a threat of taking the lead away. Also there a ways to now avoid the blue shell, so the skilled drivers will perfect their methods of doing so. Effectively in a sense a skilled driver is rewarded as they do not get hit by it.

Would I want to see a story mode in Mario Kart? I don't know. It was cool in Diddy Kong and Crash. Maybe if it didn't force people to play it and they could do the arcade mode that we all used to of just doing the cups.  A cannonball run style of a story would be funny where they race through the mushroom kingdom (one long race with stops and traps along the way)
