Isn't 2K basically the same as 1080p? (1920x1080)

 

I see marketing departments rubbing their hands over ther successful marketing campaing starting to count the horizontal pixels instead of the vertical.

2k is 2048*1080. It's close to 1080p, but it is considered to be a different resolution standard.

2k also refers to 2,000 pixel on the horizontal line which could also be (*1152 and *1536).

2k is not 2560*1440p. That's 2.5k.
