Funny, our minds have gone to two different places here. You're saying games today are more demanding, I'm asking what is so demanding about Soul Calibur VI? I mean this is just a 1-on-1 Arcade fighting game. In theory the 6th gen consoles should be able to handle this gameplay.

Did you see the Just Cause 4 video at Digital Foundry? I was actually impressed how well it works on base hardware. A fairly stable 30 fps given the action and scale of that game.

I have mixed feelings about UE4 when projects turn out like Soul Calibur VI. I really think its a matter of optimization, because some of the best looking games this gen are also UE4. I mean Gears 4, MKX, Injustice 2, Hellblade, Fortnite, Dragon Ball, Spyro, and Sea of Thieves are good looking games that use the engine in different ways. Street Fighter V deservers an honorable mention for solid visuals, but its load times are painful and the game in general feels souless.

Days Gone, Crackdown 3 and Gears 5 seem like they will make good use of the engine as well. I wouldn't say its a terrible engine at all.

@Bold When you look at the recent performance metrics, it's getting pretty bad as we've seen with ARK: Survival Evolved which also happens to use UE4 and yeah UE4 is awful at this point since no one can deny that when many of the technically ambitious projects hardly use it ...

Soul Calibur VI isn't all that terrible all things considered when it's targeting a smooth 60fps which is supposed to be a cornerstone of fighting games and Just Cause 4's technical achievements are meh worthy at best given that the game is grainy as hell since it made a downgrade in resolution compared to it's predecessor which means both base consoles are running 720p frequently even on the PS4 which often has a clear resolution advantage in many other titles ... (JC4 still doesn't run at a stable 30fps on the base X1 from what I've seen on DF so that's mainly reserved for all other systems but I will concede that it's better in comparison to it's predecessor)

Most of the projects you mentioned are far more technically inferior than Soul Calibur VI. MKX doesn't even use UE4, it uses UE3. Fortnite, of which I don't mean it's battle Royale expansion but rather it's original release Save the World runs at 30fps with it's muted visuals. Is Dragon Ball FighterZ supposed to be some thing we're impressed by given that it has far less complex models, backgrounds, effects and it even uses variable frame rate animations too ? Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is a budget 30fps platformer and LOL @ Sea of Thieves when I last checked since it dips below 30fps even on an X1X with it's simplistic graphics ...

Square Enix's customizations for UE4 couldn't save a big project like DQXI from running 900p@30fps on the PS4 and if we start seeing some more bad results on games like KH III, Crackdown 3, Days Gone, and Gears 5 I think it might be time to cut loose on the engine and consider other options in the future since it's getting as bad as Bethesda's Creation Engine ...

Is Ark reflective of UE4 being a bad engine or just poor optimization? I mean lets bear in mind optimization has improved.

I forgot MKX was UE3, either way they did a great job with Injustice 2 and I imagine MK11 will stick with UE4.

The X1 has a bunch of fighting games running 60 fps with higher resolutions. Soul Calibur VI might be pushing some higher quality effects, but its wasted by the overall ugly presentation of a low resolution, seeming little or no post processing effects to hide the jaggies, low resolution shadows and long load times. Essentially, Soul Calibur VI just become an overall unpolished and ugly game a base X1.

Just Cause 4 is an impressive open world, Soul Calibur 6 is not an impressive looking fighting game and it seems to me they were building for mid gen upgrades first. The PS4 might dip to 720p, but it also does a pretty good job sticking to 30 fps, so meh.

Incase you forgot Fortnite Battle Royal was originally a 30 fps game on consoles. It became 60 fps in future updates. I don't know if they made significant improvements on the original game.

Dragon Ball Fighterz is a good example of a game technically doing less but looks a lot better than Soul Calibur VI just because its a polished looking game. It successfully executes what its doing in a sense, Soul Calibur VI meanwhile looks like trash on the same hardware and engine.

Spyro Trilogy again, doesn't look like trash and higher resolutions in larger scale game.

Sea of Thieves is also an open world game hitting 1080p, that might be why its going under 30 fps times. Simple yet appealing graphics can be nice when it doesn't create an overall shitty image. Again, SCVI has underwhelming assets and character models and that's just 1 on 1.

DQXI actually has impressive visuals though and larger scale game. But you've completely ignored Gears 4 and Hellblade because you must agree those are good looking games.

I have a feeling developers will stick with UE4, maybe because at the very least it plays nice with mid gen upgrades and perhaps 9th gen hardware. Unless Epic tries to push UE5 in the near future.
