A popular discussion for some reason tends to be what are the worst looking games of the gen. I'm here to say Soul Calibur VI deserves an honorable mention. By far one of worst uses of UE4 on a relatively big budget game.

First of all 720p is ridiculous for a 8th gen fighting game and these visuals. Everything just looks pixelated and the character models don't look like a huge leap forward compared to 7th gen assets, I don't get it. Tekken 7 was also unusually low resolution but that game does atleast look better.

The shadows on characters are also very low resolution, like last gen stuff. Big blurry chunky shading, its awful!

But even worse than all of that, the god damn load times are insane. Loading between screens takes too long, the character select screen freezes, going to fight is a long wait, its insane. Tekken 7 also had long load times but it wasn't this bad overall.

I did find a solution though, don't use a base X1. I wasn't home when I was first playing SCVI, so I was using a base X1. When I got home I downloaded it on the beast, Xbox One X. Magically it fixed everything! I mean assets are still mediocre, but it at least looks sharp (non-pixelated mess) and loading problems have essentially been eliminated. In a nutshell, I think this is an example of what happens when developers build their games for mid gen upgrades.

On a side note, I can see why this game skipped Switch. A game that's mess on X1 specs is gonna need special love to function properly on Switch.

Its quite an achievement by Bandai Namco, I had the impression UE4 was a good choice for making well polished games. Either they suck with it or their style of fighting games just destroys this engine.
