They also devoted too much effort into the failure that is Labo.  And I say failure because it incredibly failed at what Nintendo wanted it to do.  They were hoping for a hit that would allow them to ride out the first half of the year.  Unfortunately, they had no back up plan in case it failed.  Now, it seems they will be 2M-3M short of their 20 goal.  Still good numbers, but it doesn't create a good image when you have to downgrade your estimate (which I think they will do in their next reports) while another company is constantly having to up theirs.

Such an image is only noticed by people on gaming forums, and even then it's further limited to the subset that is interested in sales.

When it is about people who are interested in sales, then of course sales history is something that has to be considered.

First full fiscal year:
PS4 - 14.8m
Switch - 15.05m

Second full fiscal year:
PS4 - 17.7m ($50 price cut)
Switch - TBD

So when you think about it, if Switch misses its target by 2-3m, then it's matching the pace of the PS4, but without a price cut.

Yeah the fact the Switch is selling along side a very successful console in its peak years really skews the perspective. The PS4's early years were considered a tremendous success and rightly so. This means that if the Switch matches or slightly surpasses these numbers you can only conclude it also is a tremendous success.
