IMO if they want to go the open world route I believe they should make an action boots on ground game with aerial combat and space combat. Basically going all out and making it a huge space epic where you can fight boots on ground and in ships.
But honestly I'd still prefer a space epic that's on rails with really big sections of open space combat like in the N64 game. Awesome aerial/space warfare, huge set pieces, awesome boss fights, and different routes depends on decisions you make or performance. Also secret routes like in the N64 version. Have like 12-15 hour long game, I know that would increase the amount of work a lot considering their would be different routes, but it would be awesome that way
Then have a 16 vs 16 online multiplayer mode with split screen.
And a co-op split screen mode where there are objectives and boss fights (I remember in the N64 version there was something like this where you had to destroy the "independence day style" mother ship.
