Install base is a pretty terrible thing to use to justify a game's sale when your console is a year old on the market, but Let's Go did alright. The weird nature of the game meant it would never be at the same level of previous mainline entries (despite Nintendo's claims of it being a mainline game).

I don't think it's an unfair thing to bring up when Pokemon X and Y launched an entire year later than Let's Go did in it's respective console's time (2.5 years vs 1.5 years). It's simply an observation that, in fact, 3DS was later in it's life and at around 40 million when that game launched, versus what the Switch is at now.

I don't think it's a huge factor though, and I'll admit that people seem very inconsistent on when they want to use install base as a factor of success.
