To be fair quality of their hardware was always good, especially earlier, you can still easily find NES, SNES, N64, GB/GBA...consoles that are completely functional.

Certainly, in my experience, I've had the least problems with Nintendo hardware. But, that's certainly way too small of a sample size to determine a thing. and, I do recall having to blow the dust out of the NES and cartridges all the time. So I'd say there was a bad design there.

 

On the software side, I'd say that the seal of quality thing did mean a little something.  I feel like there was more crap on Genesis than SNES.  But, maybe it's just that their marketing gimmick fooled me.
