It's less about the time than the fact that several studios have been involved in development during that time, including building new technology for the cloud aspect. And who even knows what complications resulted from losing some of the original developers to Epic. All of that adds to overhead, especially if there is a bottleneck in the pipeline. It also wouldn't surprise me if some aspect have been retooled after the not-great-reception the last time the game was shown, which would mean more resources invested. We'll see. I do hope we get the whole story one day. |
Well that's many AAA games, there is a primary studio doing the heavy lifting and other studios helping on other aspects. Especially when you consider the engine(s) is often licensed. It sounds like Sumo has always been the primary developer and they're using tools and assets from other studios.
However, I don't think Crackdown 3 will be profitable and I don't think it'll be a critical darling. At this rate MS needs to make good on some old promises, pump out first party content, and of course encourage people to subscribe to Game Pass. The ambitions of Crackdown 3 was a risk from the start this is the kind of risk many studios aren't making these days.
Hopefully all the delays ensured we have a game as enjoyable or more than the original. If so, Crackdown fans will be happy.
