They run their GOTY awards from October-October, games releasing now will be eligible for their next GOTY award. In November 2019 we could be hearing Smash is their GOTY.
It seems a silly time to do it, but it doesn't mean any games are missing out on a chance.
Most GOTY awards don't nominate games released in December until the following year.
