You kill retail to save money overall and bring all game purchases to your environment giving you completely control over where users can purchase your games. The user wont be undermining consoles if the only way you can perform a backup of a game is by purchasing it first. Once you purchase it your account is granted a digital license for that game and the backup will only work if you have the digital license present.
