The official details does not mention needing the paid online service to do this. You can have a look at the details in this link:

I guess two things you should be aware of though is that if you do get the paid subscription your kid will also get it if you put your account on his Switch, which means that he/she will be able to access the online services as well as your cloud save files (though of course you can disable the cloud saving on his/her console through the settings app).
