One time I had an encounter of racism against a black dude. It was in France, I've been studying there at a university for one semester as a foreign student. I found a bunch of friends who came from all parts of europe and one from the US. Anyway, in that group of people there was one black guy who came from *drumroll* Austria. One night we were a mixed group of like five or six people, some girls, some boys. We wanted to go into a dance club called Le Chat Noir. All of us passed the bouncers easily except for him. The bouncers didn't give any explanation, they just denied him. So when we noticed that we came back out and tried to clear the situation and talk with the bouncers but it was worthless. Of course we were all pissed, but he stayed calm and accepted it pretty fast. It was obviously because of his color. Yet he still insisted that we went back in and had fun without him. We did that after a while, too.
After some years I asked myself if the bouncers are truly to blame here, because it could be explained because they are racist but it might as well be because they wanted to protect him from the racist audience in the club. Made me think for a while.
Anyway. I still hear his voice in my head. A tall, bald, black guy talking with an ultra deep austrian accent. The contrast was so funny! "Jetzt geht's ihr rein und amüsiert's eich!" Absolutely hilarious.
