It launched cheaper then any home console by Microsoft or Sony. It certainly isn't modern day traditional home console price. It's in between which makes sense because it's a portable console with the ability to function with a TV. 

But not cheaper than Nintendo consoles and Switch is Nintendo console not Sony or MS console, it has higher price point than Wii and same price point like Wii U (base model whithout game), also not to mentione that 3DS had price point of $250 but only 6 months after launch needed to have price point to $170-180 in order to start selling, simple $250 price point for handheld was too high. So like I wrote, Switch has price point of home console not handheld, so no, its not strange thats not selling more because has price point of $300 that far away from price point of handheld (>$200).
