It doesn't surprise me that people here wouldn't like the Wii commercials, because most of the people here aren't the target audience. Wii advertising however have won numerous awards because they are effective at reaching their target audience.

Yeah. The original "Wii would like to play" ads were fantastic. I've been less enthusiastic about the ones since then, but they do what they're supposed to do: show groups of enthusiastic people enjoying the games together. Wii has had easily the best console-general ads I've seen, though that isn't exactly a difficult achievement. (See: every ad Sony ever made before they fired their ad group a few months ago. Although that new one with the Braveheart-esque voiceover is a little wtf too...)

For games, the best ones I've seen are still the FFVII ones. All of them were clever, and even though they didn't show any real gameplay, they blew us all away in 1997.

The Crystal Chronicles ad that just played the main theme over top of gameplay footage was good too.

So were the original Gran Turismo ads. They were nothing but replay footage with the game soundtrack on top.

Simple is usually better. Just show what the game is. You don't have to lure customers in with stupid gimmicks.
