It's not a matter of spamming it, it's a matter of choosing what you're doing in a match.
You're either
A) Dodging.
B) Getting yourself into a better position to attack.
C) Attacking.
Dodging/rolling helps the first two and the more time you spend in those dodge/roll invincibility frames during a match, the less likely you are to get trapped in the crossfire.
