Did you really just ask 'what purpose does it serve' in relation to a presentation meant to share new details and elaborate on one of the most anticipated movies of this year? a game in a franchise that traditionally has a tonne of gradual buildup spread over the 6-8 months leading up to release? one of the best selling franchises in Nintendo's library?

I, for one, am excited to see what they show! Could it be new stages? NEw characters? New/returning game modes? Elaboration on how the online will work? there's a lot we DO know about the game, but there's a lot more we DON'T know. Many people are looking forward to it because it is easily going to be Nintendo's biggest game this year (either that or Pokemon Let's go Eevee/Pikachu). So what purpose does a Smash Bros themed direct serve? Many. It's not Nintendo's fault you can't be bothered to imagine a world that doesn't revolve only around you.
