It's a personal decision-making-process if a product is worth the price. Everybody has one, but this one is mine for full-priced games: 1. Do I want to play the new game X more than some of my unfinished games?
2. Do I want to play the new game X more than the cheaper game Y?
Most new good games already fail at question one, most of the rest fail at question two.
There are many new games I want to play eventually, but they are very rarely better (or more desired) than the ones I already have.

This is very much how I am too. I rarely buy games right at release. The most recent exception though was Breath of the Wild. I literally felt like I had been waiting 25 years for another open world Zelda game like this (since Link to the Past). I couldn't wait one more moment to get my hands on it. I can see how people might view Octopath Traveler the same way, since Final Fantasy took a pretty big turn after FF6.
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.
